Aug Update: Quiet Influence — Encounters That Encourage Our Journey

Hello!

Warm greetings, friends — blessings as we continue this journey together.

In a generation where social media dominates communication and campaigns, it’s striking to meet people who aren’t part of that circle. It makes you wonder how they navigate life today.

A few weeks ago we met some of those people, and what amazed us was how quietly they influence and impact others.

We had the opportunity to participate in the 2026 C.S. Lewis Institute Summer Academy in Chicago. We looked forward to meeting some of our favorite authors and teachers — many of whom have shaped our journey over the past three years, often without knowing it.

In our book Couple’s Journey: Restore, Relearn, Rejoice, we wrote about how Lewis’s The Problem of Pain profoundly affected us during a difficult season. That led us to discover the Institute and other committed followers of Christ who are advancing discipleship through events, teachings, mentoring and books.

At the event we met Stuart McAlpine and his wife Celia, and Dr. Jerry Root and his wife Claudia — living examples of being “tied and multiplying.” We also met Dr. Thomas Tarrants, whose testimony in Consumed by Hate, Redeemed by Love helped guide us through years when anger was a heavy presence. We enjoyed five meaningful days of learning, encouragement, and conversation — including blessed time with Mr. Joel Woodruff, the Institute’s current president.

Sometimes we feel pressured to move with the culture, not realizing we may be stepping into compromise and losing focus on where God has called us. Christianity is impossible apart from the power of the Holy Spirit, yet witnessing God’s transforming work in these lives — often quietly and without fanfare — reminds us that it is all God’s work.

Praise God for those faithful influences.

With Love & Grace,

Rey & Annie
