Oct Newsletter: Union with Christ, A Marriage That Points to Grace

Seeing Our Marriage - and Our Salvation - in a New Light

Dear Friends,

Although our marriage is far from perfect, the honesty and authenticity we experience in our relationship can offer a helpful way to reflect on our union with Christ.

In his article “Union with Christ: The Sum of Our Salvation,” Bill Kynes helps us understand not only the nature of salvation, but also how the image of marriage can help us reflect on our relationship with Christ. He writes:

"In a marriage the couple assumes a new identity, no longer as individuals but as a couple. Their happiness and their sorrows are joined to one another inextricably. Marriage also has legal aspects, and so it is in our relationship with Christ. When we are joined to him, he assumes the debt of our sin, taking it upon himself and bearing it away, and we share his righteousness. God sees us not as isolated individuals, but through the lens of our marriage relationship with Christ. In union with Christ we are presented as a beautiful bride in the sight of God."

As we reflect on the imperfections in our marriage, we’re reminded of the depth of God’s grace, mercy, and love, made known through Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit.

We hope this article encourages you as much as it has encouraged us. We hear the message of salvation often, but each reminder of this wonderful gift can deepen our connection with Christ. It can also help us see our marriage in a new light—as we consider it in the light of Christ.

Let’s keep journeying with Christ Jesus.

Grace and peace,

Rey & Annie
